A well-maintained septic system works quietly for many years. A neglected one clogs, smells and stops protecting the water. The difference comes down to a few simple habits.
How your system works
Wastewater enters the two-chamber septic tank, where solids settle and bacteria start breaking down organic matter. It then flows into the anaerobic filter (FAFA), which completes the treatment. Over time, sludge builds up at the bottom of the tank and needs to be removed.
What you should never flush
- Wet wipes, diapers, sanitary pads, condoms or paper towels.
- Cooking oil and grease (that's what the grease trap is for).
- Paint, solvents, fuel or pesticides.
- Medicines and large amounts of bleach or harsh disinfectants: they kill the bacteria that do the work.
Clean the grease trap
Check the grease trap often and remove the built-up grease before it reaches the tank. It's a few-minute task that greatly extends the life of the system.
Keep the bacteria alive
Treatment depends on bacteria. A biological product like BioVactor helps activate that process, which is why every ROTOSEPT tank includes one free liter. Always follow the product's directions.
Check and remove the sludge
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends having a professional inspect a septic system at least every three years, and notes that tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. The actual frequency depends on how many people use the system and how it's used. To remove sludge, hire a cleaning company with suction equipment.
Signs that something is wrong
- Toilets and sinks drain slowly.
- There are bad smells near the tank or the drain field.
- Puddles or permanently damp areas appear above the system.
