A farm's well is much more than a water source: it's the health of your family, your animals and your crops. The good news is that protecting it largely comes down to simple habits.
1. Place the septic system far from and below the well
Groundwater moves, and it follows the slope. Install your septic system as far from the well as possible and, if the land allows, on the lower part of the property. Before installing, check with your municipality or your region's environmental authority.
2. Keep the well covered and raised
A solid lid and a slightly raised wall around the well opening keep out runoff, leaves, small animals and soil during the rains.
3. Keep pens and animals away
Manure also contaminates. Keep pens, pigsties and chicken coops away from the well, in an area where rainwater doesn't flow toward it.
4. Never pour chemicals down the drain or near the well
Motor oil, fuel, paint, pesticides or leftover spray can reach groundwater and stay there for a long time. Take them to an authorized collection point.
5. Use a grease trap in the kitchen
Kitchen grease clogs pipes and affects how the septic tank works. A grease trap catches it before it reaches the system. That's why every ROTOSEPT tank includes a free grease trap.
6. Maintain your septic system
A septic system full of sludge stops treating water properly. Check the sludge level regularly and remove it when needed. We explain it step by step in our maintenance guide.
7. Test your water from time to time
A laboratory test is the only way to know whether your water is safe. In the meantime, if in doubt, boil or purify it before drinking.
The first step: a system that treats water properly
If your farm still relies on a homemade septic pit, the change that best protects your well is installing a system that actually treats wastewater. The ROTOSEPT Integrated Septic System combines a two-chamber septic tank and a FAFA anaerobic filter in a single unit, with free installation guidance, secure shipping across Colombia and cash on delivery. And to inspect your network easily, add the inspection box with a $100,000 COP discount.
